All of K.L. Walthers books always make me feel super old because of how much fun they are to read and the carefree, youthfulness in her characters. After loving The Summer of Broken Rules I was super excited to find she had more Taylor-Swift coded books for me to devour and this one did not disappoint.
I was absolutely obsessed with Tag and Lily’s secret codes and the way they seemed to understand each other without speaking. Communicating through specific taps and code words enhanced the youth in their relationship and reminded me of how best friends communicate when playing. Their secret language made their relationship fun to read despite this admittedly juvenile aspect.
My only issue with this book is how often Schitts Creek references were called out. Rather than being subtle the way the Taylor Swift lyrics scattered throughout the book were, every time Schitts Creek was referenced, it was mentioned by name and over time it got annoying. Other than talking about Tag’s binge-watching and the name of his cat, it really didn’t need to be called out by name. People who love Schitts Creek will get it, people who don’t, won’t care enough to be told it’s a reference.
Four point seven (4.7) out of five stars!
