Review | Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross

My coworkers and I are facilitating travelling annotations between us and in the first round I’m reading Divine Rivals which is one of my coworker’s fave books. I haven’t really read a YA fantasy since I was in high school so I was excited to try a super popular recent release and Divine Rivals delivered.

From the rival journalists premise to the incredibly vivid historical fiction writing that really transported me to the front lines with Roman and Kit, I was hooked on every aspect of the story. I honestly couldn’t put it down and I loved the magical aspects and how that shifted the lens of the war.

For a YA read, it was unexpectedly deep and while I found the romance to progress startlingly fast, I guess that’s just a result of being used to contemporary romances and not the urgency of being in love during war. I fell in love with Iris’s mysterious correspondent through each letter, and Roman through each banter-filled interaction. I love how he fell for Iris first and so much harder.

This was also my first time annotating a book, and I had a lot of fun being creative between the lines and adding a little bit of colour and fun to my book. I have already borrowed the second book from my coworkers and I am so excited to read it.

Five out of five stars!
